Nantclyd Eggs

Organic Welsh Eggs

Liz Findlay farms at Nantclyd farm above the Ystwyth valley. A small family run holding it has been a Soil Association organic holding since 1989. With a total of 30 acres including woodland and wetland it supports a wide range of flora and fauna. The farm was awarded the Loraine Award for conservation in 2002 and among other awards have received the True Taste award 2005 and the Organic food Award 2012 for their eggs.

The breed of hens they have are called Silver Nick who lay a brown egg and White Leghorns who lay a white egg, they are both good strong hardy breeds that love to range. The day old chicks start life under a brooder with us in the Spring and once well-feathered at around 6 – 8 weeks they have access to the outside pasture and are moved to their laying shed at 16 weeks old. The hens moult at the end of their pullet lay and then they lay for a second year before being sold on to local small scale poultry keepers and so they have a happy, long and productive life.

The hens are kept in small flocks of 200 birds with freedom to roam pasture and hedges from dawn to dusk all year round. They mill and mix their own feed from their own home grown naked oats, oats and peas, and other grain all of which is grown in Wales. The hens are all good strong hardy breeds that love to range.
